Keeping Up w/ Scientology: Tony Ortega Joins us

Tony Ortega is a journalist who was formerly the editor of The Village Voice. He's written about Scientology since 1995, and in May 2015 released a book about Scientology's harassment of Paulette Cooper titled 'The Unbreakable Miss Lovely.'

He continues to monitor breaking developments in the Scientology world from an undisclosed location in an underground bunker he shares with four cats and one of them wrinkly Shar Pei dogs.

We discuss the various celebrities that are currently in the cult and how they got involved. You may be surprised as to who these celebrities are. We also dug into the recent murder that took place on an Australian Scientology establishment. Tony also told us about the potential elderly abuse charges that Scientology may be dealing with surrounding fraudulent credit card applications.

The Story of #Mythcon 2017

Please Consider Supporting our GoFundMe Campaign:

We lost $12k on #Mythcon 2017 and are raising money to support the cost of #Mythcon 2018.

We cannot stop talking about, listening to and challenging ideas and issues that are important to us. We will not find progress talking only to those who agree with us. We need to explore beyond our comfort zone, ask difficult questions, criticize ideas and try to find common ground in order to work on conflict resolution.

In 2017, we received major social media backlash due to our inclusion of YouTubers Sargon of Akkad , Armoured Skeptic and Shoe0nHead - which caused our 100% volunteer-run, nonprofit conference to LOSE funds. For example:

- We were petitioned to de-platform our speakers.

- Our venue received messages saying we were attracting a white supremacist crowd - forcing us to pay for additional security.

- Our hotel received harassing calls and emails.

- Speakers and special guests backed out weeks before the conference with non-refundable airfare.

- Members of our own team were threatened with doxxing.

#MythCon, put on by Mythicist Milwaukee, gives participants and speakers a chance to share and discuss a wide spectrum of ideas among those with differing viewpoints and beliefs. By inviting speakers from outside of our typical atheist circle, MythCon’s crowd of more than 560 people possessed a more diverse set of viewpoints and discussion topics than ever before.

Mythicist Milwaukee is a secular organization that promotes dialogue about religion, culture and freedom of thought. We adopt principals on free expression, with the understanding that Mythicist Milwaukee will not inhibit debate or de-platform speakers based on ideas. As an organization, it is not our place to pass judgments on ideas. It is up to our community to make those judgments for themselves - and to challenge and participate in discussion and debate surrounding ideas they disagree with.

We believe that reasoned debate and discussion can help to de-escalate tensions in light of the current
sociopolitical climate, and to create understanding among differing religious views. We hope to continue our efforts in 2018 and beyond.

Thank you to those who continue to support us in our efforts! The full video is up here:
