Membership Spotlight on...Ex-Jehovah's Witness, Daniel Wiebe

Wiebe and Walter Reed, aka Killah Priest at the Mythinformation II VIP After-Party.

Daniel Wiebe has been making up for lost time.

“I think I have learned more in the last two years than I did in the previous thirty-six,” he says.

Wiebe grew up an only child in a Jehovah’s Witness family in Wisconsin. His education was filtered through the church. He now can read about philosophy and the sciences.

“I was raised with a religious education that was largely based on deconstructing the beliefs of other religions,” says Wiebe. “It’s incredibly liberating to be able to continue that process now in seeing where the beliefs I grew up with came from.”

Wiebe and David Fitzgerald at Mythinformation II VIP After-Party, Oct 2015

He says he was indoctrinated to believe Jehovah’s Witnesses was “the one and only organization that had God’s approval.”

Wiebe was baptized at 16 years old.

“It was always understood that leaving the religion after my baptism would mean leaving God, my family, and my entire social circle,” says Wiebe.

At 24, he began having doubts about his beliefs. Over the next decade he says he experienced a “growing existential panic.” He exited the religion in September 2014 knowing his beliefs were a lie.

“It was like waking up from a dream, and as the dream ended all the relationships I had in that dream ended as well,” says the now 38-year-old.

Sam Harris was helpful in his deconversion by pointing out the absurdity of religion.  Today, he is reading more scholarly literature.

“I’m like a sponge soaking up information related to comparative religious studies,” he says.

The first Mythinformation Conference brought Wiebe and his wife, Emily, to Mythicist Milwaukee.

“I looked at Emily and said, ‘These are my people,;” he says. “Becoming a member was the next logical step.”

Wiebe says the Mythinformation Conferences and Buzzed Belief debates are important to educating society.

“I am proud to support it,” he says.

Jacob Woelfel Speaks Batman & Jesus, Holy Shit

You may wonder how one becomes a Bat-Priest.

For Jacob Woelfel, it started 12 years ago in high school when he met Jozef K. Richards.

“The next thing I knew I was just being a part of what he was doing,” said Woelfel.

At the time, Richards was already working on “Friday Night Weekly” and other film projects.

“He is ambitious, there’s no way around that,” Woelfel said.

When Richards asked him to take the Bat-Priest role, he thought it was interesting, but there was reluctance.

“I really wished I could do something a little more serious,” he said. “And then it turned out that, hey, this actually is pretty darn serious.”

Besides the depth of the film, there was another aspect that surprised him.

“I’d never thought to compare the two things, at the very least Batman and Jesus. Usually you see the comparison of Superman and Jesus...since there’s so many biblical themes in that comic and that cartoon,” Woelfel said.

Woelfel is also featured in the “Holy Shit” Bible satire series. His favorite moments from the show are both from the latest episode, Top 10 Killers in the Bible.”

“Kill the babies. That makes me laugh every time. It’s so strongly written and it shows such a clear, I guess, hypocrisy of ‘How dare you do that thing? Let’s do that thing’,”

The other is a more serious moment at the end.

“That whole monologue, I thought, was very powerful and you can see that [Jozef] wasn’t acting. He feels this way and it comes out that way. It’s brilliant,” said Woelfel.

Local Promotion at the Newaukee Night Market

“Answer a question, win a prize! Free bubbles!”

This is not the sound of a carnie recruiting customers. It is Mythicist Milwaukee promoting Batman & Jesus and the upcoming Buzzed Belief debate. The team regularly steps out onto the streets of downtown Milwaukee to meet the community for trivia and prizes.

Newaukeeans answered questions about Batman and Jesus to win a prize from the mystery bag. Participants enjoyed the option of taking bubbles over the mystery prize. It was a tough choice, but the bubbles prevailed as the more popular choice. The team receives a lot of positive feedback from the people at the market, especially considering that they are spreading the Jesus Myth theory.

Of course, Mythos the Minotaur was in full force, dancing most of the night and taking pictures with fans. He is popular!

For everyone in the area, find us during the next Newaukee Night Market.

Carrier, Bass bring a heated debate

There was a buzz in the air upon introduction to the debate. Shank Hall watched, filled to capacity, as Drs. Richard Carrier and Justin Bass dueled their respective arguments on the miraculous resurrection of Jesus Christ.

As Mythicists, we believe that it is all lore. Tonight was not about whether there was a historical Jesus. Tonight for arguments sake, it will be assumed that there was a man named Jesus. Is there any reliable source material that points to this man’s return to a living corporeal form after being publicly put to death? Viewpoints got heated during the debate and the Q & A afterwards. We recorded it all for you to watch on YouTube.

The questions from the audience only fueled the disagreements, though Bass pointed out many ways that Carrier and he agree on certain points. The resurrection is a big topic and the two frequently strayed, but not for long.

The highlight of the night was during the Q & A session. Pete Isley, Midwest chapter president of SNAP, waited in line for his turn at the mic and then said, “This is like Thanksgiving at my house but with citations.”

He spoke of the relevance of the topic of the debate to the rape of countless children right here in Southeastern Wisconsin. A video of his comments are on the MM YouTube page.

Everyone did a great job to keep things running. Sean and Fritz put a lot of effort into this project and it paid off. Many MM members went church-to-church promoting Buzzed Belief. Adam, Jason, Jozef and others worked hard to stream the debate live on the internet. Worth it!

Who is Mythicist Milwaukee? A Podcast Conversation w/the Team

The Mythicist Milwaukee team utilized a last minute cancelation of a podcast guest, to dedicate an hour on air discussing the origin and goals of the Mythicist Milwaukee organization. Podcast hosts Rob Moore and Brian Edward interview Sean Fracek and Fritz Blandon, the co-founders of Mythicist Milwaukee, on various subjects relating to the organization.

We discuss how and why the organization came together and the early struggles that we faced. We explain why we feel secularism and mythicism support one another and explain why we think that the mythicist position is so important to promote tolerance in the world. We explain why we traveled to Egypt, Greece, Kenya and Rwanda and what we brought back from these experiences. We discuss how any why the team continues to grow bigger and more influential on the national secular stage. We discuss the idea and partnership behind the satirical video series entitled “Holy Shit”, that focuses on the bizarre aspects of the Bible, which lead to the full length “Batman and Jesus” film, where we hope to illustrate how Jesus’ story has changed overtime similar to many comic book figures.

If you like what we do please help us by supporting out Patreon page.

The Mythicist Milwaukee organization started as two people that created a Facebook page, in hopes to share what they were learning about the mythicist position. This effort has evolved into a fast growing secular organization in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We have pulled off the first and second ever major secular conference in the history of Milwaukee and have partnered with very exciting speakers such as Killah Priest from the Wu-Tang Clan, Dr. Richard Carrier, Hemant Mehta and many others. With the help and support of Mario Quadracci, we will be bringing a live secular/religious debate event series to Milwaukee. The Buzzed Belief Debate Series will include the long awaited debate between Dr. Robert Price and Bart D. Ehrman on the historicity of Jesus. Our team is very committed and talented. We will continue to bring many first to secularism and mythicism in Wisconsin and worldwide!

NonBelief Grief--Is There an Atheist Afterlife?

Is There an Atheist Afterlife?

Pt. 2 Dream Land

After years of anguish, I had a break through in my grieving process. I realized that my sister may be gone physically, but she alive in my dreams. It feels real, too real. I try to figure out if it’s real in the dream too. This freaks me out in my dream and no one else seems to mind that she's alive again. When I wake up, I remind myself that she's not here.

Regardless, our relationship lives on in my dreams, almost every night. I’ve built up a catalog of memories that were made in my dreams. I swear if she steals one more of my shirts (waves fist in the air).

This video was made for school and it explains the road to this new relationship.

NEW NonBelief Grief Support Group

Mythicist Milwaukee is starting a NonBelief Grief Support Group held at Milwaukee Cooperative in the Grand Ave. mall. It will be the Tuesday after the first Discussion group of each month, beginning on February 9 at 7 p.m. Go to our page for more information.

Who are the Omaha Atheists? What is the role of the Omaha Atheists and the Apostacon?

RJ Redden and Josiah Mannion from the Omaha Atheists join us on the Mythicist Milwaukee Show

The History of Omaha Atheists:

Omaha Atheists was formed in 2008 to be a positive organization for non-theists, providing a safe place to discuss secular viewpoints and issues, work toward promoting and protecting the separation of church and state, as well as make charitable contributions to society. By 2011, Articles of Incorporation were finalized and Omaha Atheists became a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit corporation. As word spread through the secular community, the group grew and developed strong relationships with other local secular organizations. Along the way there were social gatherings, service projects to benefit the entire community, such as collecting food to donate to local pantries, and many hours of hard work spent on the annual Midwest Freethought Conference.

Omaha Atheists are very active in the community. They hold "Activism in Action" events and have created the "Godless Revolution" podcast. We can't wait to hear about their work in the community and how they have become so successful in their efforts!

Ridiculous Bible Verses

Ridiculous Bible Verses

The following is a list of Bible verses that we find appalling.  It's amazing in a modern society like ours that we have millions of people worshiping a book that endorses topics such as slavery, sexism, genocide and more. You can find hundreds more verses like these, but this is just a small sampling.

Isaiah 40:8
New International Version (NIV)
The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.”

Exodus 31:15
New International Version (NIV)
For six days work is to be done, but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day is to be put to death.

Deuteronomy 17
New International Version (NIV)
Do not sacrifice to the Lord your God an ox or a sheep that has any defect or flaw in it, for that would be detestable to him.

If a man or woman living among you in one of the towns the Lord gives you is found doing evil in the eyes of the Lord your God in violation of his covenant, and contrary to my command has worshiped other gods, bowing down to them or to the sun or the moon or the stars in the sky, and this has been brought to your attention, then you must investigate it thoroughly. If it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done in Israel, take the man or woman who has done this evil deed to your city gate and stone that person to death. On the testimony of two or three witnesses a person is to be put to death, but no one is to be put to death on the testimony of only one witness. The hands of the witnesses must be the first in putting that person to death, and then the hands of all the people. You must purge the evil from among you.

Deuteronomy 13
New International Version (NIV)
If you hear it said about one of the towns the Lord your God is giving you to live in 13 that troublemakers have arisen among you and have led the people of their town astray, saying, “Let us go and worship other gods” (gods you have not known), 14 then you must inquire, probe and investigate it thoroughly. And if it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done among you, 15 you must certainly put to the sword all who live in that town. You must destroy it completely,[b] both its people and its livestock. 16 You are to gather all the plunder of the town into the middle of the public square and completely burn the town and all its plunder as a whole burnt offering to the Lord your God. That town is to remain a ruin forever, never to be rebuilt, 17 and none of the condemned things[c] are to be found in your hands. Then the Lord will turn from his fierce anger, will show you mercy, and will have compassion on you. He will increase your numbers, as he promised on oath to your ancestors— 18 because you obey the Lord your God by keeping all his commands that I am giving you today and doing what is right in his eyes.

Leviticus 24:16
New International Version (NIV)
anyone who blasphemes the name of the Lord is to be put to death. The entire assembly must stone them. Whether foreigner or native-born, when they blaspheme the Name they are to be put to death.

Leviticus 20:10
New International Version (NIV)
"If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife—with the wife of his neighbor—both the adulterer and the adulteress are to be put to death.

Leviticus 20:13
New International Version (NIV)
"If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.

Deuteronomy 21
New International Version (NIV)
If someone has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, 19 his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. 20 They shall say to the elders, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a glutton and a drunkard.” 21 Then all the men of his town are to stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.

Matthew 18:7-9
English Standard Version (ESV)
“Woe to the world for temptations to sin![a] For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes! 8 And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire. 9 And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into the hell[b] of fire.

1 Corinthians 14
English Standard Version (ESV)
As in all the churches of the saints, 34 the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says. 35 If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.

1 Timothy 2
English Standard Version (ESV)
Pray for All People
I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling;9 likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. 11 Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 15 Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.

Leviticus 25:44
English Standard Version (ESV)
As for your male and female slaves whom you may have: you may buy male and female slaves from among the nations that are around you.

Leviticus 25:44-48
English Standard Version (ESV)
As for your male and female slaves whom you may have: you may buy male and female slaves from among the nations that are around you. 45 You may also buy from among the strangers who sojourn with you and their clans that are with you, who have been born in your land, and they may be your property. 46 You may bequeath them to your sons after you to inherit as a possession forever. You may make slaves of them, but over your brothers the people of Israel you shall not rule, one over another ruthlessly.

Exodus 21
English Standard Version (ESV)
“Now these are the rules that you shall set before them. 2 When you buy a Hebrew slave,[a] he shall serve six years, and in the seventh he shall go out free, for nothing. 3 If he comes in single, he shall go out single; if he comes in married, then his wife shall go out with him. 4 If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out alone. 5 But if the slave plainly says, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,’ 6 then his master shall bring him to God, and he shall bring him to the door or the doorpost. And his master shall bore his ear through with an awl, and he shall be his slave forever.

“When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she shall not go out as the male slaves do. 8 If she does not please her master, who has designated her[b] for himself, then he shall let her be redeemed.

17 “Whoever curses[c] his father or his mother shall be put to death.

26 “When a man strikes the eye of his slave, male or female, and destroys it, he shall let the slave go free because of his eye. 27 If he knocks out the tooth of his slave, male or female, he shall let the slave go free because of his tooth.

Isaiah 13
English Standard Version (ESV)
The Judgment of Babylon
Whoever is found will be thrust through, and whoever is caught will fall by the sword.16 Their infants will be dashed in pieces before their eyes; their houses will be plundered and their wives ravished.

Numbers 31
English Standard Version (ESV)
Vengeance on Midian
Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man by lying with him. 18 But all the young girls who have not known man by lying with him keep alive for yourselves.

White Horses: Another Common Mythological Thread

White horses (carrying their respective prophets or leaders) are yet another recurring figure in a large number of highly-visible religions and mythologies: Muslim, Christian, Celtic, Greek, Norse, Hindu, Buddhist and even the Native American Blackfoot tribe.

Below are their stories in short. Interesting to see another common thread throughout various historical cultures' myths. Add to our list if you have found others!

Al-Burāq (Arabic: البُراق al-Burāq "lightning") is a mythological steed, described as a creature from the heavens which transported the prophets. Al-Buraq carried the Islamic prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Jerusalem and back during the Isra and Mi'raj or "Night Journey", which is the title of one of the chapters (sura), Al-Isra, of the Quran.

The Rider on the White Horse (Revelation 19:11-21) is a story of a magnificent white horse which carries Jesus Christ as he leads angels and saints in a dramatic battle between good and evil after Jesus' return to Earth.

The verse reads as follows:
11 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war. 12 His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. 13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. 14 The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. 15 Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. "He will rule them with an iron scepter." He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty...

In Celtic mythology, Rhiannon, a mythic figure in the Mabinogion collection of legends, rides a "pale-white" horse. Because of this, she has been linked to the Romano-Celtic fertility horse goddess Epona and other instances of the veneration of horses in early Indo-European culture.

In Greek mythology, the white winged horse Pegasus was the son of Poseidon and the gorgon Medusa. Poseidon was also the creator of horses, creating them out of the breaking waves when challenged to make a beautiful land animal.

In Norse mythology, Odin's eight-legged horse Sleipnir, "the best horse among gods and men", is described as gray. Sleipnir is also the ancestor of another gray horse, Grani, who is owned by the hero Sigurd.

In the Puranas, one of the precious objects that emerged while the devas and demons were churning the milky ocean was Uchaishravas, a snow-white horse with seven heads. (A white horse of the sun is sometimes also mentioned as emerging separately). Uchaishravas was at times ridden by Indra, lord of the devas. Indra is depicted as having a liking for white horses in several legends - he often steals the sacrificial horse to the consternation of all involved, such as in the story of Sagara, or the story of King Prithu.

Kanthaka was a white horse that was a royal servant and favourite horse of Prince Siddhartha, who later became Gautama Buddha. Siddhartha used Kanthaka in all major events described in Buddhist texts prior to his
renunciation of the world.

Native American Blackfoot
In Blackfoot mythology, the snow deity Aisoyimstan is a white-colored man in white clothing who rides a white horse.
