Reason and Postmodernism w/ Dr. Peter Boghossian

Dr. Peter Boghossian's main focus is bringing the tools of professional philosophers to people in a wide variety of contexts. Peter has a teaching pedigree spanning more than 25 years and 30 thousand students - in prisons, hospitals, public and private schools, seminaries, colleges and universities, Fortune 100 companies, and small businesses. His fundamental objective is to teach people how to think through what often seem to be intractable problems.

Dr. Peter Boghossian and his team developed the Atheos app to help people have non-confrontational discussions about gods, religion, faith, and superstition. It shows you how to gently explore a person's strongest beliefs.

Peter's primary research areas are critical thinking and moral reasoning. His doctoral research studies, funded by the State of Oregon and supported by the Oregon Department of Corrections, consisted of using the Socratic method to help prison inmates to increase their critical thinking and moral reasoning abilities and to increase their desistance to criminal behavior.

Peter's publications can be found in Scientific American, Time Magazine, Diálogos, CounterPunch The Philosopher's Magazine, Skeptical Inquirer, Education Policy Analysis Archived, The Clearing House: Educational Research Controversy and Practices, The Radical Academy, Offender Programs Report, Teaching Philosophy, Corrections Today, Informal Logic, The Skeptic, Journal of Philosophy of Education, Educational Philosophy and Theory, Inside Higher Ed, Essays in Philosophy, Federal Probation Journal, the Journal of Correctional Education, Radical Pedagogy, Allthink, Quillette, Truthout, and Motherboard.

Peter was a Councilman for the State of Oregon (LSTA), the Chairman of the Prison Advisory Committee for Columbia River Correctional Institution, an advisor to Sockeye Magazine and The Weekly Alibi, wrote national philosophy curricula for the University of Phoenix, and was a research fellow for the National Center for Teaching and Learning. He teaches Critical Thinking, Science and Pseudoscience, the Philosophy of Education, and Atheism at Portland State University, is an Affiliate Research Assistant Professor at Oregon Health Sciences University in the Department of General Internal Medicine, is a national speaker for the Center for Inquiry and the Secular Student Alliance, an international speaker for the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science.

Atheists in Kenya Continue to Fight w/ Harrison Mumia

Harrison Mumia is the President of Atheists In Kenya (AIK), the most vibrant atheists movement in Kenya.

Atheists In Kenya's mission is to promote the growth and interaction of atheists in Kenya. Harrison has debated at numerous forums in Kenya including the University of Nairobi debate, titled "Does God Exist?".

He has extensively written articles about atheism, religion and secularism both in Kenyan print and on the atheists in Kenya website, as well as google groups and blogs. He has been featured on the BBC, CNN as well as  NTV, KTN, Nation FM, QFM, Family Radio and KBC, which are all mainstream TV and Radio stations in Kenya, discussing issues revolving around secularism, atheism and religion in Kenya.

Born in 1978, in Nairobi, Harrison Mumia completed his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science in 2003 at the Jomo Kenyatta University, Kenya. He is currently working with the Central Bank of Kenya as a Corporate Communications Manager.

Through his experience as a leading atheist in Kenya, Mumia has worked together with local secular groups to push for a total separation of religion and state in Kenya. His articles have elicited public debate in the areas of religious education in public schools, preaching in public space especially in public transport vehicles and the authenticity of miracles by religious leaders. Inspired by atheists like Richard Dawkins, the late Christopher Hitchens, Mumia is committed to promoting secularism in Kenya.

Today, more than 80 percent of the 46 million residents of Kenya are Christian. The remaining 20 percent of the country is a combination of Islam, Hinduism and traditionalists. And the word “atheist” is one rarely uttered by your average Kenyan.

In Kenya, religious indoctrination and adherence to the Abrahamic faiths is deeply engrained into the culture. Children pray in public schools and orphanages, prayer takes place in the workplace, and Christian beliefs and practices are preached on all of the major Kenyan media outlets on a daily basis. One visit to the country and experiencing the culture may leave the impression that there is no hope for secularism here.

This is where Harrison Mumia and the Atheists in Kenya group come in. Mumia is pioneering the unthinkable. He is taking on the overwhelming task of challenging the religious privilege by promoting secular and humanist values. Mumia and his team are openly secular and have appeared on many of the Kenyan media outlets, including the major newspaper and morning talk shows. They are working hard to bring many of the secular "firsts" to Kenya including the first ever atheist conference, atheist billboards, debates and much more. They are a shining beacon of hope for secular ideals in a country that is grossly indoctrinated into a religion that was forced upon their country.

The Faithless Feminist w/ Karen Garst

Author Karen Garst Joins us on the Mythicist Milwaukee Show

Karen Garst is an atheist and a feminist. She started focusing on her atheism in 2014 when the U. S. Supreme Court issued its decision in Burwell vs. Hobby Lobby. In this decision, the Court decided that the owners of Hobby Lobby, because of their religious beliefs, were not required to provide certain forms of birth control to their female employees under the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).

She strongly believes that the time has come for women to be able to openly and freely express their atheist views without shame and ridicule in our society. She has a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin Madison.

Karen Garst is currently editing a book entitled “Women Beyond Belief: Discovering a Life Without Religion” which will explore  stories of women who have left religion coming from diverse religious backgrounds. This book is scheduled to be out sometime in the Fall of 2016.

You will find topics that vary from separation of church and state issues to well researched pieces on the mythological roots of modern day religions.
